Navigate the ethical code and conduct framework

Independent IBBC Capital draft content for self-study. Not affiliated with or endorsed by CFA Institute. New lessons await subject-matter review. No CFA designation or official PSM credit is awarded.

Learning goals

  • Explain code and standards using mechanisms and limitations.
  • Explain responsibilities in practice using mechanisms and limitations.
  • Explain conduct process using mechanisms and limitations.

Draft · approximately 25 minutes, excluding further revision.

Code and standards

The Code sets broad commitments to integrity, competence, care, client interests and market trust; detailed Standards translate these commitments into conduct obligations.

Seven groups address professionalism, market integrity, clients, employers, research conduct, conflicts and program/member responsibilities; one action can implicate several groups.

Responsibilities in practice

Continuous role-relevant competence matters alongside honesty; accepting unfamiliar duties requires appropriate learning or support rather than relying only on a designation.

Client communication should explain the service and associated client costs as well as the investment process and limitations; technical vocabulary does not replace clarity.

Conduct process

The professional-conduct process can investigate allegations, consider evidence and impose sanctions under its procedures; an allegation is not by itself a final finding.

Practice cases require linking specific facts to duties and a preventive response; merely naming a Standard does not explain why conduct complies or violates it.

Formula and assumptions

Analyze facts → duties → assessment → corrective procedure; never infer a performance guarantee from credentials

Original applied case: Navigate the ethical code and conduct framework

  1. A fictional firm advertises an analyst’s designation as proof of guaranteed performance in an unfamiliar strategy.
  2. Separate two issues: competence for the assigned duties and truthful description of qualifications and uncertain results.
  3. Remove the guarantee, assess training and supervision needs, and retain evidence supporting permissible factual statements.

Errors to catch

  • Do not assume: The Code applies only to investment performance rankings.
  • Do not assume: Each action can involve only one conduct group.
  • Do not assume: A designation makes competence permanent for every role.
